We have good news for those with a new Mac trying to use Dropbox on Apple’s native silicon. After Dropbox said it had no plans to take advantage of Apple’s latest processors, then received plenty of backlash, the company just confirmed its Mac app beta with native Apple silicon support will be available to all users by the end of the month.

Apple’s new custom processor like the M1 and new M1 Max chip in the latest MacBook Pro is great, but it’s also causing problems with many apps and programs. Last year Dropbox explained why it doesn’t support Apple’s M1 chip, and it caused quite the stir. Users all over the forums were upset, as the Rosetta emulation can gobble up RAM and power, especially on Dropbox. In addition, for the company to not take advantage of all the performance enhancements of Apple’s chipset was frustrating, and many users voiced their complaints.

So much, in fact, that the company’s CEO publicly announced a native Apple silicon Dropbox Mac app would arrive in early 2022. We reached out to Dropbox after initial reports by MacRumors, and ReviewGeek received this statement from Dropbox:

“We’re testing native Apple Silicon support with a limited number of users and plan to open the Beta to all users by the end of the month.”

Right now, a small number of Mac users have access to a beta version of the Dropbox Mac app with Apple silicon support, and it sounds like the beta test is running smoothly. As shown above, the company plans to fully open the beta to all Mac users by the end of the month, which is good news.

Before this news dropped, we saw many Mac Dropbox users jump ship to other products, including Microsoft’s OneDrive. However, with an official Apple silicon-supported app on the way, users can rest easy knowing performance should improve soon.

Keep in mind that when the Dropbox Mac app arrives at the end of January, it’ll still be a beta, so some users may experience issues. For now, look out for the beta in the coming weeks.
