“After my discussions with VP Pence and others, the federal government has agreed to withdraw federal officers from Portland,” Brown said in a tweet. “They have acted as an occupying force & brought violence. Starting tomorrow, all Customs and Border Protection & ICE officers will leave downtown Portland.”
The acting head of the Department of Homeland Security, Chad Wolf, added in a separate statement that he anticipates the agency to “change our force posture” if circumstances on the ground in the city change.
Wolf said he and Brown had agreed to a joint plan to end “violent activity” in the city aimed at federal buildings.
“State and local law enforcement will begin securing properties and streets, especially those surrounding federal properties, that have been under nightly attack for the past two months,” Wolf said in the statement.
“Oregon State Police will coordinate with Federal Protective Service (FPS) officers to ensure all federal facilities remain protected and secure,” he added.
The federal officers and protesters have been clashing nightly since their deployment in early July amid growing demand for withdrawal from Oregon officials.
The city has endured two months of protest and riots since the police-involved death of George Floyd.
