The former co-worker of George Floyd and Derek Chauvin who said the two “bumped heads” while working part-time security detail at a nightclub years several before their fatal encounter has recanted his story.

David Pinney, a former employee at El Nuevo Rodeo in south Minneapolis, told CBS in an interview that aired in part Tuesday that the pair had crossed paths, and claimed that they knew each other “pretty well” while working at the club, where he accused Chauvin of “being extremely aggressive” with some clubgoers.

Pinney took back his account Wednesday in an email to CBS News, saying he confused Floyd with another former worker at the club.

“There has been a mix up between George and another fellow co-worker,” Pinney wrote the outlet.

The club’s former owner, Maya Santamaria, connected CBS News with Pinney, according to its update report.

“She specifically said she was unable to give information about George because she did not have a close relationship with him as I did,” Pinney’s email continued, claiming that’s what led to the error. “I apologize for not doing my due diligence and placing you in a very uncomfortable situation.”

Pinney, however, said he stood by his characterization of Chauvin, a former Minneapolis cop facing second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s May 25 death that prompted protests across the country.

Pinney sat down with CBS News on Saturday to detail several interactions he said occurred between Floyd and Chauvin, claiming the duo worked together for up to six months in late 2015 and early 2016.

“Is there any doubt in your mind that Derek Chauvin knew George Floyd?” CBS News asked Pinney.

“No,” Pinney replied. “He knew him.”

Pressed further, Chauvin knew Floyd “pretty well,” Pinney said

“I knew George on a work basis,” Pinney continued. “We were pretty close. When it came to our security positions, he was in charge and I worked directly below him as a security adviser.”

Investigators, meanwhile, are looking into whether Floyd and Chauvin knew each other – and to what extent if so, CBS News reports.

Santamaria also told the outlet that investigators have asked her if there had been any disputes between the two men.
