We all know it; women all over the world fear it, but very few of us get to escape it; it’s menopause. Going through menopause can bring about both physical and emotional challenges, making it essential to prepare and have the right support and resources to make the transition more manageable. Whether you’re currently going through menopause or fear that the time may soon be coming, here are some tips to help you get through it.

Medical Support

Menopause means you’re body is going through a lot of changes, hormonal fluctuations, and both physical and emotional challenges. However, these challenges can be mitigated by a close relationship with a doctor you trust. Consult them when going through uncomfortable symptoms to explore potential treatment options. From suggesting hair loss treatment, hormonal replacement therapy to reduce menopause symptoms, or other medications. Maintaining regular check-ups helps you monitor and manage health concerns related to menopause. 

Comfy clothes

While you may not have control over how uncomfortable menopause can make you feel, sometimes swapping into some comfortable clothes can help you feel a little better. Set aside lightweight and breathable clothing to help you manage hot flashes and night sweats. When you’re out and about, dress in layers so you can easily remove them when a hot flash strikes. 

Get some cooling products

Hot flashes are the most common symptom of menopause, and to prepare for these uncomfortable symptoms, cooling products are necessary. Fans, cooling pillows, and cooling mattress pads can alleviate your elevated body temperature, especially at night. To remain prepared outside of the home, consider purchasing a portable rechargeable fan. 

Proper hydration

Proper hydration is essential during menopause. The sweating from hot flashes can make you feel dizzy and dehydrated, so remember to carry a reusable water bottle and sip throughout the day. When you feel a hot flash coming on, drink something nice and cold to alleviate your symptoms. Hormonal changes can also increase your feelings of thirst, so expect you and your water bottle to become very good friends.

A nutritious diet

As your body goes through changes during menopause, so does what it needs in regards to nutrition. Emphasize calcium-rich foods like cheese, other dairy products, broccoli, legumes, and fish with bones like sardines to support your bone health. Foods rich in phytoestrogens, like soy products, have also been known to help alleviate menopause symptoms. 

Other important nutrients to integrate into your diet include iron and lots of fiber, in addition to a regular healthy diet. Some foods to avoid during this phase are those with high amounts of unhealthy fats, like fried foods, while moderating your sugar and salt intake. 

Emotional support

In addition to its physical challenges, menopause also, unfortunately, comes with emotional challenges as well. Moving onto this next phase of life can cause emotional turmoil that is only enhanced by volatile hormonal fluctuations. 

Check-in with yourself regularly and seek support from friends and family who you feel comfortable speaking openly with. There are also many support groups, forums, and communities of people who know what it feels like to go through menopause, offering you a sense of community and some tips to help you get through it. 

If you find you’re still having trouble coping during this phase, some counselors and therapists specialize in what women go through during menopause. They can offer you support and strategies to help you cope with menopause. 

Symptom-relief products

Because menopause is a natural part of our life cycle, you can bet there’s a market for products to help to relieve uncomfortable symptoms. From supplements to creams, patches, and more, these products boast their effectiveness in battling menopause symptoms. While no solution will be a one-size-fits-all cure, do your research and consult with your doctor before adding these products to your routine. 

Libido support

Many women struggle with their libido and sex life once they reach menopause. While for some, sex may be the last thing on your mind, sex is an important part of life and relationships. This requires some creativity from you and your partner. Make a point to try new things in the bedroom and purchase a medical-grade, high-quality lubricant to manage vaginal dryness.

Gift yourself some comfortable and breathable bedding and sleepwear to help you feel more relaxed at night. Additionally, build your nighttime routine and stay consistent with it to help your body know when it’s time to go to bed. If you need some extra support hitting the hay, consider adding a sleepy tea to your routine or a melatonin supplement. 

However, sleep is crucial to your body’s ability to recover, and if you think you may be suffering from insomnia as a result of menopause, consult with your healthcare professional to see if a prescription sleep aid can bring you relief during this time.

Remember, everyone’s experience with menopause is unique, so don’t be frustrated if it takes some trials to find what brings you relief. Consulting your healthcare provider is crucial so you can work together to create a personalized plan that addresses your needs and concerns. And recognize that there isn’t shame in menopause; we all go through it and should feel comfortable talking about it. Aging is beautiful; we just want to offer a little support for you as your body changes.
