#SZA Shares Video for New Song “Hit Different” With Ty Dolla $ign

SZA is back. Tonight, she released a new song called “Hit Different”—her first new music as a lead artist since releasing Ctrl in 2017. It features Ty Dolla $ign and was produced by the Neptunes. The song comes with an accompanying video—SZA’s directorial debut—and features footage shot in a scrapyard and a barn. Multiple times, she appears covered in blood. Check it out below.

In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, SZA revealed she recorded the song with the Neptunes at DJ Khaled’s house while he was at this year’s Super Bowl. “I can’t really wrap my head around the experience and I think more so I’m fangirling off of having a track produced by probably the most formative producers and artists for me when I was growing up,” she said, saying they made five or six songs during that session. “I just cannot fucking believe that because it’s my childhood dream and I can’t believe that I made things I that fuck with with someone that really changed my life.”

Earlier this year, SZA joined Justin Timberlake on the Trolls World Tour song “The Other Side.” After giving an interview with Rolling Stone where she revealed that she’s been working on new music with Timbaland, Sia, and Pharrell, she revealed in an Instagram Live session that she’s also got collaborations with Lizzo, Megan Thee Stallion, Kehlani, and Jhené Aiko in the pipeline.

Last month, SZA suggested on Twitter that Top Dawg Entertainment head Terrence “Punch” Henderson was delaying the release of her new music. She characterized her relationship with the label as “hostile” and wrote, “I’ve done all I can do.” She later deleted the posts. TDE and RCA are the labels behind her new single. “Just wanted to start sharing stuff… first time directing… thank you to everyone involved that brought my heart to life… thank u for putting up w me #TDE,” she tweeted after the song was released.

Last year, SZA joined DJ Khaled for his Father of Asahd track “Just Us.” SZA also jumped on “Power Is Power,” a collaborative single with Travis Scott and the Weeknd for the Game of Thrones tribute album For the Throne, and appeared on Post Malone’s album Hollywood’s Bleeding.

In 2019, SZA was nominated for a Best Original Song Oscar for her Black Panther collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, “All the Stars.”
