“Suzume, Reincarnated as a Slime Movie Sit at Top of Japanese Weekend Box Office”

Makoto Shinkai‘s Suzume remained at the top of the Japanese weekend box office for its third consecutive week, with the supernatural adventure film earning 843 million yen (~US$6.07 million) during the November 26-27 weekend period according to Kogyo Tsushin.

In total, Suzume has so far earned 6.27 billion yen (~US$45.15 million) since its November 11 debut. As noted by Business Insider Japan, this puts it nearly on par with Shinkai’s 2016 mega-hit Your Name, which made 6.29 billion yen (~US$45.3 million) in the same period, while surpassing Weathering With You‘s 5.91 billion yen (~US$42.6 million).

In second place on the weekend box office ranking was That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond, which debuted in Japan on November 25. The film, which is based on an original story by the light novels’ author Fuse, made 297 million yen (~US$2.4 million) during the weekend and 416 million yen (~US$3 million) overall.

The other anime films on the weekend ranking were One Piece Film Red at fourth place and Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night at ninth. The former has made 18.54 billion yen (~US$134 million.) in total so far in Japan, while its worldwide gross (discounting Southeast Asia) was calculated by Box Office Mojo to be over ~US$162.6 million.
