“Supreme Court issues six decisions, wait for abortion ruling”

The Supreme Court released opinions in six cases Wednesday, but Americans were left waiting for a ruling in a closely watched case that could overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that legalized abortion across the US.

The six decisions handed down Wednesday involved veterans benefits, Medicare reimbursements and a dispute about gaming on tribal lands in Texas. One case that was not decided was Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

That case pertains to a Mississippi law that bans all abortions after 15 weeks, except in medical emergencies and fetal abnormality. Both sides of the dispute have insisted that the conservative-leaning court cannot leave the law in place without also overturning its Roe ruling.

Emotions surrounding the Dobbs case were ramped up in early May, when Politico published a leaked draft decision written by Justice Samuel Alito that described the Roe decision as “egregiously wrong from the start.”

The leak spurred protests outside the Supreme Court building and the justices’ homes — as well as attacks on pregnancy crisis centers and an assassination attempt against Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Dobbs is the first abortion case taken up since Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined the court in October 2020, creating a 6-3 conservative-leaning majority.

The Supreme Court has yet to issue opinions in 18 of the cases argued before it this term, which began in early October and is expected to wrap up by the end of June or early July.
