Staten Island Rep. Max Rose catches flak for participating in George Floyd march

Rep. Max Rose is catching flak for participating in a march on Staten Island Friday protesting police brutality following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis.

The peaceful march made its way to the 122 Police Precinct on Hylan Blvd. in New Dorp.

The Democratic congressman marched through the conservative borough along with a few protesters carrying signs reading, “Defund the NYPD.”

“Staten Island’s youth are leading an incredibly powerful, peaceful movement for justice in honor of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many Black lives that have been lost due to senseless acts of violence,” Rose said in a tweet.

The tweet featured a picture of him marching with his wife, Leigh, and infant son, Miles.

But law-and-order types were not amused, particularly with the march stopping at the 122 Police Pct.

“Why is Max Rose indicting every cop in the country right now? That’s what he’s doing,” said Sergeant Benevolent Association president Ed Mullins.

“Rose has been seeking the backing of law enforcement the past two years. You can’t have it both ways,” he said.

He added, “Should we march in front Congressman Rose’s office because some politicians are guilty of corruption?”

Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis — Rose’s likely Republican opponent this fall for the 11th congressional district seat covering Staten Island and southern Brooklyn — also criticized his participation.

“Congressman Max Rose taking part in demonstration where marchers chanted ‘Defund the Police’ and carried signs saying ‘Blue Lives Murder’ is a disgrace,” she said.

“Along with wanting to close Rikers Island, release dangerous criminals with no bail and believing that inmates over 50 years old should be sprung from prison, it highlights risky and dangerous beliefs that once again proves that he’s just another liberal who will say or do anything to get reelected.”

Staten Island is known as a cop-friendly borough and considered a swing district in the general election.

President Trump easily carried the congressional district against Democratic Hillary Clinton in the 2006 election.

But Rose upset GOP incumbent Rep. Dan Donovan in the 2018 mid-term elections.

Rose, a combat Army veteran who earlier this week called for the deployment of the National Guard to stop looting and violence in the city, defended his participation in the March.

Of Mullins’ criticism, Rose said, “I never thought I’d see the day when the head of the SBA would become a snowflake who needs a safe space.”

In response to Malliotakis, he said, “The country is in pain, so young Staten Islanders worked with the NYPD to organize a peaceful protest and Nicole’s take away is to attack the kids?

“Just this week she praised these marches as ‘setting an example for the nation’ until I walked with young people in our borough,” he said.

“Nicole is a fraud and if she thinks people don’t see that, she’s more delusional than Bill de Blasio.”

His spokesperson said Rose has supported police by backing permanently funding the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, helping pass the Public Safety Officer Pandemic Response Act and securing $170 million in counterterrorism funding for the NYPD.

He also said Rose blasted the bail reform law and called for fixes.
