ABC will be spending a bit more time in the 1960s as The Wonder Years reboot has just been renewed for a second season. This is certainly great news for the show’s cast and crew, not to mention the viewers, as the rebooted Wonder Years had been experiencing some issues behind the scenes. It was just recently revealed that Fred Savage, who starred in the original series and worked as a director and producer on the reboot, had been fired from the series.

Savage exiting the reboot may have had some fans thinking the show was over, but the renewal was announced on Friday. The series officially scored a renewal alongside other network shows The Conners, Home Economics, Big Sky, and A Million Little Things. In the case of The Wonder Years, ratings have fluctuated, though they’ve gone up significantly when factoring in multi-platform viewing. The series has also garnered strong reviews from critics with a near-perfect score of 96% at Rotten Tomatoes.

Developed by Saladin K. Patterson and based on the original series of the same name, The Wonder Years debuted on ABC in 2021. It is set in the 1960s and follows the Williams family, consisting of 12-year-old Dean (Elisha “EJ” Williams), father Bill (Dulé Hill), mother Lillian (Saycon Sengbloh), and sister Kim (Laura Kariuki). The series also stars Amari O’Neil, Julian Lerner, and Milian Ray, and features the voice of Don Cheadle to narrate the series as an older Dean Williams.

Fred Savage Won’t Return for Season 2

News of The Wonder Years getting renewed comes shortly after Fred Savage’s termination from the series. Savage, who played Kevin Arnold in the original sitcom as a former child star, had been working as a producer and director for the reboot. Reportedly, there had been multiple accusations of misconduct on the part of Savage, and it was announced that he would no longer be working with the series moving forward. There are rumors of Savage having anger issues including outbursts against talent on the set.

It was an unfortunate turn of events, as Savage had been heavily involved in getting The Wonder Years rebooted for a new generation. When the Dean Williams character was cast, Elisha “EJ” Williams was essentially taking over as the “new Kevin Arnold.” Savage had personally informed Williams of the casting in a video ahead of the show’s production, welcoming the young actor into the franchise.

“We got you on this Zoom because we wanted to welcome you to the family, and tell you that it’s your turn to be the star of The Wonder Years,” Savage tells Williams in the clip.

Reboot developer Saladin K. Patterson added, “It’s kind of like the passing of the torch, right? From one generation of The Wonder Years to another one. I cannot tell you how blessed we are that you are going to be part of this one.”

The season finale of The Wonder Years will air on ABC on May 18.
