Sports presenter Erin Molan has endured a year from hell, but the former star on Australia’s Channel 9 is relieved to be putting 2021 behind her.

In September, Molan announced she had split from her fiance. The 39-year-old, who previously hosted “The NRL Footy Show” on Channel 9, had been engaged to homicide Detective Sean Ogilvy since 2017, and the couple welcomed daughter Eliza the following year.

We are entirely committed to co-parenting our three-year-old daughter, who is the most important person in the world to both of us,” Molan’s now-deleted post reads.

“Any breakdown of a family unit is incredibly difficult and we ask for privacy at this time – especially given the private approach that we have taken to our relationship.”

The announcement of her separation came during a difficult time for Molan, who has taken news outlet the Daily Mail to court over a story published on June 5, 2020.

It centered on Molan saying “hooka looka mooka hooka fooka” on 2GB’s Continuous Call Team program after a co-host mentioned practicing how to pronounce player names.

Molan alleges the publication defamed her as a “racist” and “arrogant white woman of privilege” who mocked Polynesian names.

“I felt sick. I felt angry. I was very upset,” she told the Federal Court in August. “I didn’t sleep.”

COVID-19 lockdowns have only compounded her problems, making it difficult to see family and friends during a tumultuous period in her personal life.

Molan opened up about her year in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.

“I have always loved family more than anything else,” she told The Daily Telegraph.

“But I think this year in particular, going through a family breakdown and having to do that without mum and dad or any family support close by, just reiterated how important it is to be surrounded by people that you love.

“And just for my daughter, to give her a family environment for her first Christmas since Sean and I have separated is really important and trying to give her as much normality as possible.”

Back in April, it was also revealed that Molan’s father, Liberal Senator Jim Molan, had been diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer.

“I am just blown away, he is in a really good place,” she said.

“We are blessed to live in a country where he has access to medicine which means we will have him for years to come.”

Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Molan had left her position at Channel 9 to join rival station Sky News Australia and write a regular column for Sydney’s Daily Telegraph newspaper.

Molan was appointed a Sky News Primetime Contributor, which will see her appear in a wide range of the network’s programming. She’ll also host a new documentary focusing on online safety, and issue she has previously campaigned on.

Molan will continue co-hosting her 2Day FM breakfast show alongside Dave Hughes and Ed Kavalee in 2022.

Speaking on a radio show in September, Molan told co-hosts Hughes and Kavalee she had taken up a piece of their advice to help put the breakup behind her.

“When I first told you guys that my partner and I had separated, Hughesy you said one advantage to this — apart from a few others — is that you can listen to break-up songs and cry,” she said.

“I realized when I had an hour to myself that I hadn’t done that yet, so I put on break-up songs and it was amazing.”
