Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is rocketing to number one in the box office chart for the weekend on its domestic release and is expected to end the weekend on upward of $67 million. The sequel to Sonic’s first big screen outing, which provided one of the last hit movies to be released before the Covid pandemic closed down many of the world’s cinemas, has become one of the few movies to have been released recently that has managed to open with a bigger weekend than its pre-pandemic predecessor.

Sonic the Hedgehog blew away all expectations when it was released in 2020, especially considering the initial problems with the design of the title character that led to a lot of rework being done on the movie before its release. Now it looks like Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is about to do the same thing with an opening weekend of around $10 million higher than the first movie, which would put it on track to be the highest grossing video game movie of all time domestically.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Sonic 2 sees the return of James Marsden, Jim Carrey, Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, as well as the addition of Idris Elba and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Knuckles and Tails respectively. This time around Sonic and his friends must take on Dr. Robotnik and his cohort Knuckles as he attempts to harness the power of the Master Emerald and use it to take over the world. With the usual twists and thrills, it is very apparent that there is a lot of love out there for the blue speedster, and the opening performance has clearly shown why a third movie and spin-offs are already in development.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opened last weekend in 31 markets, including the UK, and took over $26 million. If the currently projections for this weekend prove to be correct, that puts the film’s combined opening worldwide gross at just short of $100 million, something that very few post-pandemic movies have managed to achieve.

A sequel is already in production, although Jim Carrey’s recent talk of retirement has put into doubt whether he will be back for the threequel. The movie’s producers have made it clear that they do believe he will be back in Sonic 3 providing they deliver a good enough script. In the event that Carrey doesn’t return, the part of Robotnik would not be recast.

In addition to the second sequel, Paramount also announced that a spinoff series centering on Knuckles will be heading to their Paramount+ platform, with Idris Elba returning to provide the voice of the echidna once more. Although there are no other details currently available about the series or what other characters from Sonic’s world may appear in the new show, there is no doubt that it will be another popular addition to the franchise when it joins Paramount+ sometime in roughly the next year.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is now playing in cinemas worldwide.
