#The God of High School Episode 9 – Cursed & Cornered

After learning that his grandfather, Jin Taejin, has been confined, Mori rushes to set him free. Daewi and Mira await his arrival at the tournament with no idea what’s going on. With Mori missing and Daewi suspended, Mira is forced to kick off the team match alone. (synopsis via Crunchyroll)

Whoa! That was a lot to unpacked in one episode. I’m still trying to process everything.

Wait, I really liked this episode. Have we been bamboozled?

ThThere are some exciting fight sequences for Mori and Mira. I… don’t like this show, but every few episodes. it gives me something I genuinely enjoy. I am forced to keep watching.

It’s frustrating. We’ve been critical of the show for the last few weeks and I had really given up on it. But then it turns around and delivers a decent episode.

Well for starters, Mira finally got some quality attention in what turned out to be a pretty great fight. I had expected her to only play a small role this episode, but she ended up getting some of the coolest moments the anime has shown us yet.

And she unlocked her Persona Charyeok! I knew who it was the second I saw the head dress.

At first I found the sword’s unexpected re-appearance comical, but the payoff at the end made it all worthwhile.

So, the guy with the sword is a clone? Some cultist who got promoted? What does the sword even see in that guy?

His skincare routine.

Ah… if only I can be so grossly incandescent.

We have a bunch of questions and at this point, we probably won’t get an answer.

Still, the fighting is very entertaining and enjoyable to watch. It’s one of the strengths for the show.

Mori’s final action sequence in this episode is fantastic. I’ve spent a lot of time complaining about concurrent fights awkwardly struggling for screen time. But this episode shows an unexpectedly cool way to show two fights in one.

I can see the creator of the show likes Kill Bill and The Matrix

I ended up going back and rewatching some of the scenes from The Matrix Reloaded. You can definitely see the influence!

We did get Robert Downey Jr. inspired Mr. President at the beginning of the series.

I love seeing how different media influence the animation style.

Either way, this is the most cohesive and well-paced episode yet, since there is a clear overarching plot connecting Mori and Mira’s scenes.

We’ll have to see if The God of High School keeps up the momentum of this upswing.

The God of High School is now streaming on Crunchyroll
