“The Tatami Time Machine Blues Coming to Disney+ US in November”

The November 2022 streaming schedule for Disney+ has revealed that The Tatami Time Machine Blues will arrive on the streaming service in the US on November 9.

The show previously premiered in some other regions on September 14, while a three-week Japanese theatrical run is set to begin on September 30. The Disney+ version features an extra episode with original content.

The Tatami Time Machine Blues is based on the 2020 Kadokawa-published novel written by Tomihiko Morimi and based on a concept from Makoto Ueda. The book is a sequel to Morimi’s 2005 campus novel The Tatami Galaxy and is also described as a “collaboration” between that book and Ueda’s Summer Time Machine Blues stage play. The Yojohan Time Machine Blues website calls the anime a “devilish combination” of The Tatami Galaxy and Summer Time Machine Blues.

The premise involves the remote of the only air conditioner in the Shimogamoyuusui residence being damaged. As the protagonist “Me” attempts to come up with a response to this turn of events, a student named Tamura, who claims to have travelled from 25 years in the future via a time machine, appears. “Me” comes up with the idea of going back in time to resolve the air conditioner predicament, but his friend Ozu and other parties end up complicating matters.

Yojohan Time Machine Blues‘s staff includes Shingo Natsume (One-Punch ManSonny Boy) as director, Ueda (The Tatami Galaxy series composer) as scriptwriter, Yuusuke Nakamura (The Tatami Galaxy) as original character designer, and Michiru Ooshima (The Tatami Galaxy) as music composer. Science SARU is the animation production studio.

Other staff include Nobutake Itou (The Tatami Galaxy) and Shouko Nishigaki (The Tatami Galaxy animation director) as character designers, Fuminao Akai (Yurei Deco) as art director, Ayaka Nakamura (Ride Your Wave) as color designer, and Hikari Itou (Yurei Deco) and Yoshihiro Sekiya (Yurei Deco) as photography directors.

Meanwhile, the returning cast includes Shintarou Asanuma as “Me,” Maaya Sakamoto as Akashi, Hiroyuki Yoshino as Ozu, Junichi Suwabe as Jougasaki-senpai, Yuuko Kaida as Hanuki-san, and Setsuji Satou as Aijima-senpai. Kazuya Nakai is playing Seitarou Higuchi, having taken over the role from the late Keiji Fujiwara in 2017’s The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl movie.

Actor Chikara Honda, who had a small role in The Tatami Galaxy, is playing Tamura-kun. Honda also previously played the time-traveller Akira Tamura in the 2005 Summer Time Machine Blues live-action film.

Science SARU previously produced the 2010 11-episode anime series adaptation of The Tatami Galaxy and the 2017 anime film adaptation of its spiritual successor, Night Is Short, Walk On Girl. Those adaptations were directed by Masaaki Yuasa, with Natsume contributing some of the show’s storyboards and serving as episode director for The Tatami Galaxy‘s sixth episode.
