We were so excited for Cameron Diaz‘s big Hollywood comeback!

The Charlie’s Angels star officially retired in 2018, but she hasn’t been in a movie since way back in 2014. At the time she was in demand and working hard, too — starring in Annie, Sex Tape, and The Other Woman all in one year. The next year she found a reason to give it all up — meeting her husband Benji Madden.

Years later she talked about how grateful she was that through that relationship she saw what the industry and its long hours and intense pressure had done to her soul. She told Gwyneth Paltrow about walking away from movie stardom:

“I just decided that I wanted different things out of my life. I had gone so hard for so long, working, making films and it’s such a grind. When you’re making a movie — it’s a perfect excuse — they own you. You’re there for 12 hours a day for months on end and you have no time for anything else.”

She also said she’d found “peace of mind” as a wife to the Good Charlotte rocker and a mom to their daughter Raddix, a life lived away from the cameras.

We were happy she found her happiness. But we’d be lying if we said we weren’t disappointed we wouldn’t be seeing her chaotic energy back on the big screen again. From amazingly unhinged performances in dramas like Vanilla Sky and The Counselor to pure charm in The Mask and There’s Something About Mary, she was always a total MVP.

So when we learned her pal Jamie Foxx had talked her into making her return to the big screen for a movie called, appropriately, Back In Action, we were psyched! Unfortunately, we’re now hearing the turmoil on the set has put her right back off of Hollywood!

In case you hadn’t heard, there was a report last week from The Sun that the action comedy was drowning in IRL drama! A source claimed:

“There have been some issues on set and Jamie has had a major meltdown over it all.”

A “major meltdown”? Oof. They elaborated:

“He demanded the problems be sorted immediately and sacked four of the production staff, as if that would magically improve the situation.”

The four staff fired were reportedly an executive producer, an assistant director, a unit director, and even Jamie’s personal driver! The insider said the film’s crew were “totally fed up” and that Foxx had “become pretty unpopular.” Yeesh!

And it seems the toxic set has been a big ol’ brick wall on Cameron’s road back to being a film actress. An insider told DailyMail.com on Monday that the Sweetest Thing star has just been reminded of all the reasons why film sets are not where she’s meant to be:

“These back-to-back 10-hour workdays have been a lot on her and she hates being away from Raddix. Cameron loves being a mom more than anything in the world.”

And of course the drama has made it all worse! The source continued:

“She hates drama and confrontation. This is why she retired from the business in the first place. She has already proven herself in the industry and has nothing left to prove to anyone.”

The insider said while the drama was upsetting to Cameron, they’d be “incredibly surprised if it caused any tension between Jamie and Cameron,” who were too good of friends. The confidant added:

“When you are in a position of authority, sometimes you have to make decisions to let people go who do not share the same vision as you. Cameron is a businessperson and understands that this is necessary at times and, honestly, Jamie is the only reason that she is doing this film and they are still very close.”

Not so close? Cameron and Benji during the movie! They still get to see each other, but being apart for these long hours is taking a toll! The insider says the rocker hasn’t been doing great with his wife dipping her toe back into the industry:

“Benji is supportive of everything that Cameron does, but it has been a lot on him. Although she has gotten to see her family while shooting the film, it is just not the same.”

It sounds like this has all been totally discouraging of the big Hollywood comeback we were hoping for. But who knows? Maybe in a few years, when Raddix is older, she’ll try again and there’ll be smoother sailing?
