#So I’m a Spider, So What Light Novel Author & Illustrator Q&A at VCRX

Virtual Crunchyroll Expo is almost here and will feature Okina Baba and Tsukasa Kiryu, the author and illustators of the light novel, So I’m a Spider, So What? Anime Trending got the chance to talk to them before their panel on September 4 at Virtual Crunchyroll Expo.

Okina Baba, author of So I’m a Spider, So What?

Thank you for your time! What is the creative process like for writing new chapters of So I’m a Spider, So What?

I first decide on the ending, and then work on the story that leads to that. In the process, I would fill in the gaps with necessary information and scenes.

In your novel, why are spiders considered the lowest level species in comparison to other fantasy species like slimes or goblins?

I wanted the protagonist to struggle. (Laughs)

Tsukasa Kiryu, illustrator of So I’m a Spider, So What?

Thank you for your time! The illustrations for So I’m a Spider, So What? light novel are incredibly colorful and invoke a story in itself. What is the creative process like behind each cover?

Thank you! I’m delighted.

For the cover, the editor tells me what kind of art he wants. I read the text or plot and then produce rough drafts. I then finish off the draft that’s chosen. The rest is utterly boring… (fixing the composition, sketching, inking, separating layers per character…) The theme color for a volume is decided at the rough draft stage, so generally the overall coloring I select compliments that.

When designing the creatures, monsters, and characters itself, do you have any live references to use?

When designing the imagined creatures I reference the actual creature of the same species (or multiple species) and add on features based on the habitat it lives in. For people, I draw them based on their personality, lifestyle, and social standing. Ronandt was specifically modeled after Dr. Emmett Brown from “Back to the Future.”
