Plot:

Student Hinako Mukaimizu moves to a coastal town and discovers surfing there. When she meets firefighter Minato Hinageshi and they grow closer through their shared passion for surfing, a wonderful love story begins. But the two lovers are torn apart by a tragic event – until Minato begins to appear to the astonished Hinako all over the water …

My conclusion:

When “Ride Your Wave” was released in German last year, I immediately liked the trailer that went with it. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to watch the film for a long time. That has now changed – and I’m thrilled.

The first part of the film creates a cozy “feel-good” atmosphere. The viewer can watch the lovebirds Hinako and Minato in their everyday life – and of course while surfing. All the more tragic, Hinako is hit by a sudden stroke of fate. However, “Ride Your Wave” always manages to strike a good balance between sadness and hope. Minato’s appearance as a kind of water spirit also brings a certain supernatural note to the film, which ensures the most interesting moments. The movie generally has a good story arc. I particularly liked the coherent finale, which of course I don’t want to anticipate here.

The animations from the studio Science SARU impress with the extremely fluid movement sequences and a distinctive character design. That makes the film a real feast for the eyes. But the German setting can also delight: Here dialogue director René Dawn-Claude has once again provided a beautiful synchronization from Oxygen. The whole thing is rounded off by the band’s main song “Brand New Story” GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE. This is a real catchy tune and also plays an important role in the film.

All in all, I can recommend “Ride Your Wave” to every anime fan for a nice but also emotional film evening. It’s best to convince yourself of it – for example in the legal stream of Anime on Demand or Crunchyroll.
