#Shaun Donovan, Ray McGuire botch Brooklyn real estate question

Two candidates looking to replace Mayor Bill de Blasio in City Hall botched a simple question about real estate prices in Brooklyn.

Shaun Donovan and Ray McGuire, both Democrats, were asked by The New York Times editorial board what the median sales price was for a home in Brooklyn.

“In Brooklyn, huh? I don’t for sure,” said Donovan, who served as housing secretary under President Barack Obama. “I would guess it is around $100,000.”

Donovan was off by a longshot as the correct figure for the median cost of a home in Brooklyn is $900,000.

McGuire, a former executive at Citigroup, was even further off the mark.

“It’s got to be somewhere in the $80,000 to $90,000 range, if not higher,” he told the Times.

A spokesman for Donovan told The Times that the mayoral candidate “misinterpreted the question and made a mistake.”

McGuire told the newspaper he “messed up when accounting for the cost of housing in Brooklyn.”
