#Seattle ‘Karen’ accuses black real estate photographer of filming women with drone

July 31, 2020 | 5:38pm

A “ridiculous” white woman in a “Live United” T-shirt accused a black man hired to photograph real estate with a drone of using the machine instead to film women, new viral video shows.

“You’re going to come out here cussing, saying I’m filming women, really?” the incredulous man asks, according to the video, which was shared Friday on the Reddit thread “PublicFreakout.”

“Yes!” replies the masked woman.

The drone pilot tells her he was on a shoot for the Seattle-based brokerage Redfin.

“I was hired and working a job, notified the homeowners that I was there and got approval to fly, not to mention I have my FFA Part 107 license to fly drones,” a text overlay on the footage said.

The reference was to the FAA’s remote pilot certificate, which is required for commercial drone pilots and demonstrates they understand all regulations and procedures to operate the aerial vehicles.

The woman threatens to call Redfin.

“You are ridiculous. Go home. Go home Karen, please!” he says, using a derogatory term for entitled white women in social media. “Oh, because I’m black you think I’m just out here filming s—?”

The pilot, Thomas Samuel, a freelancer who specializes in drone photography with his DJI Mavic Pro, told The Post in a phone interview that he felt the incident in the diverse Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle was racially motivated.

“She accused me of being a creep and a pervert and of spying on her,” he said. “If I was white it wouldn’t have escalated.”

Samuel said that after the woman stormed off, he waited in his car for his colleague, but she soon showed up again with her companion and continued harassing him in front of his co-worker and neighbors.

“Both of them said I needed to notify them before my shoot, which is not true. I know the rules. I was well within my rights,” he told The Post.

Samuel posted the footage from the July 21 incident on Facebook.

“Just had this women come at me accusing me of being a criminal and a pervert/creep with my drone bc I was taking pictures of her neighbors house smh,” he wrote.

“I was hired and working a job, notified the homeowners that was I was there and got approval to fly … She came out of her house cussing and imeaditely (sic) assumed the worst of me and what I was doing bc there no way a black man could actually be working and minding his own business.”

The clip also was picked up by the popular Twitter account, Fifty Shades of Whey, where users lambasted the woman.

“I don’t have an issue with her asking why someone is flying a drone around her house, but he gave her a perfectly reasonable explanation. It should have gone no further,” @aanrobin6 wrote.

And @vintage_vendor said: “People are becoming lunatics. It’s extremely common in real estate right now to use drones to get property overviews that are cleaner, closer, better resolution than Google Earth which may be charging businesses for the service. Also tax assessors use them.”

The user added: “Eye roll to infinity.”

A message left with Redfin was not immediately returned.
