#Seahawks’ Pete Carroll ‘pumped’ about Jamal Adams trade

July 27, 2020 | 11:09pm

Before he was traded to the Seahawks, star safety Jamal Adams ripped Jets head coach Adam Gase for a lack of leadership and charisma. He now gets the chance to play under the outspoken Pete Carroll, who has proven he does not lack those qualities.

The Super Bowl-winning coach is already excited about his new defensive stud.

“Yeah, well, we’re really pumped about it,” Carroll said on SiriusXM NFL Radio Monday. “It’s so difficult to get a great player on your team, and when you have that opportunity, and you’ve got to take a good look at — [general manager] John Schneider did a fantastic job of following through this process. He and his guys worked all the way throughout to stay involved with this thing so that we would have a chance with really the simple thought, ‘How could we ever get a player of this magnitude on our team?’ We’ve been drafting in the low twenties and the thirties or something forever, and that pick has never allowed us that kind of opportunity. So if we were in the draft, Pat [Kirwan], and we’re sitting there on draft day and we see a guy up there on the board that we covet and we’ve got to do whatever we can to get him, then what would it take to get up there in the — he was picked sixth or fifth, or whatever the heck it was.

“He would probably take a number one [draft pick] — and it’d probably take something else. Shoot, we can get this guy to play on our team right now. And so, John did an incredible job, and I think this is another statement for John Schneider, man. He has done such a remarkable job for so many years. He’s got the chutzpah go for it, and he did it again. And I’m just — we’re all fired up about it and looking forward to Jamal coming to our club.”

The Seahawks had to part with two first-round picks, a third-round pick and safety Bradley McDougald. As a team ready to contend for a Super Bowl, however, Carroll believes the price tag was necessary.

The team has been looking for a replacement for star safeties Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas – integral members of Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” that helped win them a Super Bowl – since the pair left the team. Carroll believes Adams is the proper heir to their throne.

“Well, first off, our mentality is to always compete,” Carroll said. “We’re competing in every one of these opportunities … It started months ago, and it’s just taken a long journey to get to this point. And it took vision and foresight, and really, the guts to hang in there, and really, the courage to make a big move like this. It’s hard for teams to make a big move, but John had – and we were concentrating on this thing, and so he went for it and pulled the trigger, and then we got it done. So, it’s been a long time.”
