A new teaser trailer has been released for the Zegapain anime film sequel Zegapain STA (abbreviated from “Statement Alpha”). It is scheduled to be released theatrically in Japan this coming Summer 2024.

The 30-second trailer briefly highlights the main characters involved in the film’s story.

The trailer also lists the anime film’s production staff, which includes some returning staff from the 2006 TV anime series. Masami Shimoda (11eyes, Future Folktales) is returning as the director, with Katsuhiko Takayama (Overtake!, Protocol: Rain) as screenwriter. Akihiko Yamashita (Cagaster of an Insect Cage) is returning from the TV series as the film’s character designer, working alongside Tatsuya Suzuki (Valvrave the Liberator) and Marie Tagashira (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury).

Rei Nakahara, Noriyuki Jinguji, Takahiro Yamada, and Hideki Fukishima are serving as the film’s mecha designers. Ayako Ootsuka (Aquarion Evol) is the music composer and Sunrise is the animation production company.

Additionally, the trailer reveals that Kengo Kawanishi is joining the film as Hal Velt. He joins many voice actors from the TV series that are reprising their roles for the film, which includes:

  • • Shintarou Asanuma as Kyou Sogoru
  • • Kana Hanazawa as Ryouko Kaminagi
  • • Ayako Kawasumi as Shizuno Misaki
  • • Romi Park as Mao Lu-Shen

The announcement of Zegapain STA is part of the Zegapain Project Reunion plan, which happened in October 2023. It involved a re-screening of the 2016 Zegapain ADP compilation movie and a rebroadcast of the TV series.

The Zegapain anime series ran for 26 episodes from April 6, 2006 to September 28, 2006. It was created by Sunrise collective Hajime Yatate and Takehiko Itou. Sentai Filmworks rescued the license for the anime in 2013 from Bandai Entertainment.

The series also inspired two video games from Bandai Namco Games and Cavia in 2006, as well as a manga adaptation, radio drama, guidebooks, and two novels in 2009 and 2011.

Amazon describes the story of Zegapain as:

Reality and fantasy seem to be breaking down for student Kyo Sogoru. Is he really the smart but unpopular swim enthusiast at Maikama High School or the pilot of the giant robot Zegapain in a war-devastated world? From the day he meets the mysterious girl Shizuno Misaki, his life changes forever as he begins to question reality and his own sanity. Which life is real and which is fantasy? As he fights the forces of the enemy GARDS-ORM and tries to keep his school swim club going, Kyo searches for answers. But is the truth even stranger than he’s ready to deal with?
