#Saquon Barkley won’t just disappear from Giants despite injury

This is the way the Giants want to proceed with Saquon Barkley. They know their star running back will spend plenty of time away from the team facility once he has right knee surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and partially torn meniscus. They know there are COVID-19 protocols in place that make it tricky for injured players to be on the sideline or even in the building. They also know the more they see and hear of Saquon Barkley, the better for all concerned.

“As much as we can have him around here, we absolutely want him to,’’ coach Joe Judge said. “This guy was elected captain by his teammates for a reason, and he’s an integral part of this program. … He’s a very positive guy, he’s a very team-first guy. The adversity he’s going through right now, he’s going to work as hard as he can. I can say that with absolute confidence. I’m very anxious to see him on the back end coming out of this thing, because I know the aggressiveness he’s preparing with.“But absolutely, we want Saquon around here as much as he can. Working around his schedule, he is a part of this team. He’s a part of this team, and we want him around as much as we can have him.”

If the Giants are going to find any success rushing the passer, it will likely come from the left side of their defense. San Francisco’s Trent Williams is a mauler at left tackle, but right tackle Mike McGlinchey has allowed five quarterback hits and four pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. … Kyle Shanahan has a strong reputation evaluating and getting the best out of his quarterbacks, and he says he likes what he sees from Daniel Jones.

“How he plays the game — he gets the ball to the right spot, he finds the weakness in the defense, when stuff isn’t there, he has the ability to create,’’ Shanahan said. “He’s an extremely efficient quarterback, he’s extremely tough, extremely competitive, who can make all the throws needed and you can tell he plays the game the right way. He doesn’t guess, he reacts and sees it. You can see a lot of very good qualities in him. That’s how he looked at Duke and how he looks now.’’

The Giants through two weeks are the lowest-scoring team in the league, with 29 points.

“There is always a sense of urgency, obviously,’’ offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said. “Some games are going to be more lower scoring games because of the team you’re playing or the style you want to play. Other games, you might want to open it up a little bit more. Obviously, we need to score more points. We need to be more productive of an offense.’’
