#Rockies vs. Astros prediction, preview: Take Colorado

The Houston Astros and Colorado Rockies, who meet Monday night at Minute Maid Park, are trending in opposite directions from how they performed in 2019 — and the Rockies have a starter who has recaptured his peak form.

After ranking toward the bottom of most statistical categories for qualifying starting pitchers in 2019 with a 3-11 record and 6.73 ERA, Kyle Freeland has led his team to victories in all four of his starts so far this season. Despite just 13 strikeouts in 25 ²/₃ innings, he’s gone at least six innings in all of his starts while giving up three runs of fewer each time, including three starts with two or fewer.

His counterpart, Brandon Bielak, has more than held his own as a rookie, posting a 1.76 ERA and 2-0 record in two starts and two long relief appearances. Much like Freeland, he is not much of a swing-and-miss guy with 11 strikeouts in 15 ¹/₃ innings. He also has given out seven walks.

The problem for the Rockies in past years has been playing significantly worse on the road than at home (they went 28-53 on the road last season and 43-38 at home). They’ve started much better on the road this season with a 6-2 mark, with only the Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers having a better road winning percentages entering Sunday.

With Jose Altuve and George Springer both hitting below .200 to begin the year and the Rockies having a league-best 1.80 ERA on the road, this trend should continue for Colorado.

The Play: Rockies, 143.
