“Robert Saleh explains timeout usage during Jets’ final drive”

Robert Saleh admitted he could have handled his timeout situation differently.

After the Lions took a 20-17 lead with 1:49 left in the fourth quarter, the Jets had all three timeouts as they sought to at least tie the score and force overtime. But Saleh ended up not using his first timeout until there were 19 seconds left, and had one in his pocket as kicker Greg Zuerlein missed a 58-yard field goal to end the game.

“I’ll look back at it. With three timeouts, feel like anything in bounds, obviously you can be aggressive. Just trying to save as many timeouts as I can,” Saleh told reporters after the game. “I can probably look back it and say we could’ve used one, for sure. But at the same time, when you have three timeouts, time’s not an issue whether you use one there or not. But yeah, I could always, in hindsight, for me, call a timeout to settle the guys down. But as far as from a time standpoint, you still have plenty of time with three timeouts.”

After taking a sack and throwing an incompletion to begin the drive, Zach Wilson connected with Garrett Wilson for 22 yards on third-and-19 to get to the Jets’ 38-yard line. Saleh did not use a timeout with the clock ticking below a minute remaining.

Zach Wilson then threw an incompletion before connecting with Garrett Wilson again for 10 yards to get to the Jets’ 48-yard line. After an incompletion and an 8-yard sack, the Jets used their first timeout with 19 seconds left.

Two plays later, Zach Wilson hit Elijah Moore for a 20-yard gain, and Saleh was able to use his second timeout with one second remaining before Zuerlein’s attempt went wide left.
