#Republicans come to Tim Scott’s defense amid racist attacks

Republican lawmakers are coming to the defense of Sen. Tim Scott after he faced a torrent of racist responses from some Democrats to his rebuttal to President Biden’s first address.

Speaking to Fox News Thursday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) called the smears against his GOP colleague “disgusting” before slamming Democrats and Twitter for allowing a racial slur to trend.

“Tim is a good friend, and he understands the miracle of opportunity that is America, that there’s no nation in the history of the world that has enabled so many people to start with nothing and achieve the American dream,” the Texas senator began.

After praising Scott for his characterization of racism in America, Cruz turned his focus toward Twitter, which allowed the racial slur “Uncle Tim” to appear on its list of trending topics for 12 hours after the speech.

“Twitter, on the other hand — listen, the left is intolerant, the left believes in cancel culture, and there are few things that enrage the left more than minorities that don’t sit down and shut up and obey.”

In an interview on the same network Thursday, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) also came to Scott’s defense, calling the racially based hatred her colleague received “shameful.”

“You know that’s shameful, that is shameful. If anybody knows Tim Scott, you know him to be the real deal. A wonderful human being that helps all of us understand his growing up, his challenges. He talked about that last night,” the West Virginia senator told anchor John Roberts.

“I mean, I don’t understand this idea that if you don’t have the right political label, you can’t talk about your own upbringing and your own focus, and you have to be so derided,” she continued. “I think it’s horrible.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who serves the same state as Scott, took to Twitter to express his disgust at the hate his colleague had received.

“To the despicable liberals who are trying to smear my good friend @senatorTimScott — all because he dares to be conservative and proud of it — you are failing miserably. He’s getting stronger by the day!” Graham wrote.

Scott is hitting back himself, accusing the left of exposing their own “hypocrisy” and “true motivation.”

Speaking to Fox News’ “Hannity” Thursday evening, Scott described it as “saddening to see” the kind of backlash he faced as a black man for saying in his address to the nation that “America is not a racist country.”

“The left has lost their mind today. It’s really saddening to see. What the left is doing is fighting bigotry with bigotry, and they’ve exposed their hypocrisy and their true motivation,” he continued, noting that those incentives have “nothing to do with ending prejudice.”

Scott’s speech to the nation came late Wednesday.

By Thursday morning, the term “Uncle Tim” was trending on Twitter, a reference to the term “Uncle Tom,” which describes a black person who is obsequious to white people.

It took the social media platform 12 hours to take the racially based term down from its “Trending” section.

The South Carolina senator, whose name has been thrown around as a 2024 presidential contender, called it “really disheartening to see the left’s response and frankly, even Twitter’s response to racism and racial slurs.

“If it comes from the left it must be okay, according to Twitter’s response 12 hours later,” he continued.

“I wish the Democrats — who always feign or virtue signal — would take a look in the mirror and ask themselves: would they put up with that from anyone other than themselves? And if you won’t police yourselves, don’t look at the other side.”

Scott went on to express pride in who he is and how he identifies before again calling out the hypocrisy of those going after him.

“The truth of the matter is, the hypocrisy needs to stop. I am a black man, I am proud to be black. I happen to be a conservative because I came to the conclusion a long time ago that conservative policies and principles is the way that we set people free, free to be whoever they want to be.”

“You actually are free to disagree with me, that’s the beauty of America, and what Democrats are selling is that you are not free to be yourself.”
