Some tweets are just better off not being sent. The Red Sox learned that lesson the hard way on Tuesday.

With the season reaching Sept. 1 and the competitive balance tax therefore being reset, the Red Sox posted a tweet of a “Reset button” with the the accompanying caption “iykyk,” which stands for “if you know, you know.”

It of course didn’t go over well with their fans, with Boston in last place in the AL East and sporting a dreadful 12-23 record. They quickly deleted the tweet.

The negative reaction obviously has more to do with how the Red Sox have been run in the last year. They dealt superstar Mookie Betts to the Dodgers instead of locking him up on a long-term contract and traded away five players from the major league roster prior to Monday’s trade deadline.

“You ever miss with a tweet? Same,” the team later tweeted.

Per Cot’s Baseball Contracts, the Red Sox paid $6.3 million in taxes in 2015-16 and when they went over the threshold in 2018 (they won the World Series that year) and 2019, they paid an additional $25.3 million.
