“Red in Select Countries This Fall”

Crunchyroll and Toei Animation have jointly announced that they will screen the upcoming One Piece Film: Red in select countries this fall. The latest film in the One Piece series will be screened in both subbed and dubbed for the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. More details about the film’s screening will be revealed at this year’s Anime Expo convention on July 2, 2022 in Los Angeles.

One Piece Film: Red will be the 15th film in Eiichirou Oda’s long-running franchise, coinciding with its 23rd anniversary. It is scheduled to premiere in Japan on August 6, 2022. The story will follow an all new adventure featuring Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat pirates, as they find themselves deeply involved with the mysterious character, Shanks.

Toei Animation will also hold a series of special events at Anime Expo 2022 to celebrate the upcoming release of the film. Among them include an exclusive one-night musical event with Grammy nominated artist and DJ Steve Aoki, as well as a special panel featuring One Piece producer Shinji Shimizu, Brandon Potter (who voices Shanks in English), Ian Sinclair (who voices Brook in English), and ADR director Anthony Bowling.

One Piece Film Red is directed by Gorou Taniguchi (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;Surrection, One Piece: Taose! Kaizoku Gyanzakku), with Tsutomu Kuroiwa (One Piece Film: Gold, GANTZ:O) writing the screenplay. Eiichirou Oda is the executive producer of the film and credited with the original story.

Other staff members include Masayuki Satou (One Piece Film Strong World character designer and animation director) as character designer and chief animation director, Hiroshi Katou (Mars Red co-art director) as art director, Sayoko Yokoyama (One Piece “WE ARE ONE” commemoration video) as color designer, and Ema Tsunetaka (Megalo Box 2: Nomad) as photography director.

The original One Piece manga began in 1997 and has released 102 tankoubon volumes in total as of June 2022. It is currently serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump and published under the Jump Comics label.

An anime television series began in 1999 and surpassed the 1000th episode mark on November 21, 2021, while the first One Piece movie premiered in 2000. Toei Animation has been in charge of animation production for both the TV and film series.

Crunchyroll describes the film’s synopsis as:

Uta —the most beloved singer in the world. Renowned for concealing her own identity when performing, her voice has come to be described as “otherworldly.” Now, for the first time ever, Uta will reveal herself to the world at a live concert. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans —excited pirates, the Navy watching closely, and the Straw Hats led by Luffy who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance —the voice that the whole world has been waiting for is about to resound. The story begins with the shocking fact that she is Shanks’ daughter.
