Kevin Cash won’t let history hinder his team’s strategy.

As the Rays prepared to close this weekend’s series against the Yankees at Tropicana Field, their manager validated the Yankees’ feelings that led to two ejections on Saturday but didn’t vow any changes.

“The only thing we’re mindful of is, we’re trying to compete and go out and win. I think it’s best to leave it at that,” Cash said Sunday morning. “Everything that we’re doing, we’re trying to get a really good lineup out. I can respect their thoughts and I think it’s just, we’ve got to continue playing games and finding ways to win.”

In the fifth inning of the Yankees’ 5-3 loss to the Rays Saturday, in the second game of a doubleheader, Yankees manager Aaron Boone and hitting coach Marcus Thames drew ejections from home-plate umpire Vic Carapazza moments after DJ LeMahieu hit a comebacker to pitcher Andrew Kittredge to end the top of the frame. Kittredge had enraged the Yankees by throwing up and in to LeMahieu, the third such high-and-tight pitch of the day to the visitors, and after the game, Aaron Judge said the tension “was more just about the history.” During a September 2018 game, Kittredge threw behind popular Yankee Andrew Romine, and Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia retaliated by drilling Jesus Sucre.

“Not to get into too many details, I don’t know what their perspective was,” Cash said. “I know what ours is: We’re trying to do everything we can to win the game. And that’s kind of where I’ll leave it.”

Yankees reliever Chad Green said on Sunday that he didn’t anticipate any carryover into this series finale. Nevertheless, he made clear how unhappy the Yankees felt over Saturday’s developments.

“As a pitcher, you know where the ball is going the majority of the time,” Green said. “I think every once in a while, one can slip, but when it happens over and over again, I think hitters do take exception to it. We wouldn’t be at this level unless we knew where the ball was going. So when it happens over and over again, yeah, you raise an eyebrow and wonder what’s going on.

“So I think our guys had every right to say something and that’s what we did. It just happened to get some ejections out of it.”
