#Quincy Wilson: Trade to Jets ‘one of the best days of my life’

August 23, 2020 | 2:56am

Late on Day 3 of the NFL draft, Quincy Wilson got news that he welcomed.

The Colts had traded the cornerback to the Jets for a sixth-round pick. You could say Wilson embraced the change of scenery.

“When I got traded it was a good day, probably one of the best days of my life,” Wilson said. “A lot of things went wrong in Indy. I’m just happy for this new opportunity, this new situation I’m in that’s way better. I’m just ready to show that I can play.”

Wilson did not want to get into exactly what went wrong for him with the Colts, but it sounded like he was not a fan of their zone coverage scheme. A second-round pick in 2017, Wilson comes to a Jets team with starting cornerback jobs up for grabs and some of his former college teammates at Florida in the secondary with him — Marcus Maye and Brian Poole.

Wilson, 24, has made some plays already in training camp and is enjoying the Jets’ defensive style.

“It’s more aggressive,” Wilson said. “They coach you to make plays, not to cover grass. That’s how I’ve always been taught, to go get the ball.”

Defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson scouted Quincy Wilson out of college and said he believes the cornerback needed to believe in himself again.

“Quincy’s biggest thing and what I saw from watching the tape was confidence,” Dennard Wilson said. “I think he lost his confidence for whatever reason. For me as a coach and a mentor, the biggest thing for me is to get these guys to believe in themselves and get his confidence back and then help him with his technique. He’s having fun. He’s playing ball. He’s playing fast.”

The Poole mystery continues. The nickel cornerback has not practiced since Aug. 14, when he suffered from dehydration after practice. Coach Adam Gase insists the Jets are just trying to make sure Poole does not have another problem, but it is strange for him to be out this long.

“It’s just kind of the reaction to the dehydration,” Gase said. “It just kind of makes us go back and re-evaluate kind of how we even got to that point. So, that’s why we’re being cautious with it. When he gets back out there, we want to be able to be out there for the entire practice. We don’t want to keep going through this cycle, so we want to make sure we get it right.”

LB Avery Williamson and TE Ryan Griffin were activated off the physically-unable-to-perform list. TE Daniel Brown was activated off the non-football injury list. … Bronson Kaufusi has switched positions from defensive line to tight end. … The Jets signed safety Anthony Cioffi, who they had released last week, and released TE Connor Davis.
