A judge found Render Stetson-Shanahan, 30, guilty of manslaughter in February in the Sept. 28, 2016, death of 26-year-old Carolyn Bush.
“[Stetson-Shanahan] showed no mercy when he repeatedly plunged a knife into this young woman’s body,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement on Thursday.
Stetson-Shanahan, who chose to have a non-jury trial, was sentenced on Wednesday.
Prosecutors said the illustrator, then 26, confessed to the slaying moments after being taken into custody, telling officers “I stabbed myself and I stabbed my roommate.”
Officers had responded to reports of a man wandering around the neighborhood with a knife, wearing nothing but his boxer briefs.
They found Stetson-Shanahan — the son of famed New Yorker magazine illustrator Danny Shanahan — inside the second-floor apartment on Stanhope Street near Onderdonk Avenue, laying in bed and bleeding from a self-inflicted wound to his right thigh.
Bush, an aspiring writer and student, was discovered sprawled on the floor in the next room, with stab wounds all over her neck and torso.
In a jailhouse interview in October 2016, Stetson-Shanahan told The Post that he did not remember plunging a kitchen knife into his roommate — but said he knew he shouldn’t walk free.
