#Will The Legend of Zelda have its own anime series soon?

Even after 35 years of existence, The Legend of Zelda is still an absolute hit and a real cultural asset. It wasn’t until 2017 that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the latest part of the series, which quickly became one of the most successful games of the decade. We all know and love Link and his adventures – so it is hardly surprising that rumors have been circulating for years whether there will be a series for the series.

In between it was even said that Netflix was working on a live-action series, but that was never going to happen. But just recently, an interview by the Zelda Dungeon team with the editor of Powerhouse Animation, David Howe, sparked new hope: He spoke about the potential of a possible The Legend of Zelda anime series. This year the series finally celebrates its 35th birthday. Wouldn’t it be time to finally fulfill the fans’ dream? We have the information.

The cult icon is still a hit today

It was 1986 when the first part of The Legend of Zelda saw the light of day. The legendary Shigeru Miyamoto is the brain behind the successful Zelda series and thus quickly created a game that, like his creations, Super Mario Bros and Donkey Kong belongs to the real classics of the 80s. To this day, his characters are in the minds and hearts of people from all over the world, because even 35 years later, the adventurous Link and Zelda are as popular as ever. Looking back over the past decade, the newest title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is actually one of the best-selling game titles. With over 24 million units sold since the 2017 release, the newest part is considered by many to be the best title in the series. Wouldn’t it be time to free The Legend of Zelda from the boundaries of the gaming world and adapt it to a television series?

The rumors have been circulating for years

Admittedly, the idea of giving Link and Zelda their own TV series is not a new one. At the end of the 90s, an anime series based on The Legend of Zelda was even released in the USA, which, however, is paid little attention to because of its terribly poor quality. Netflix, on the other hand, got a lot more attention a few years ago when information was leaked that the streaming giant was working with Nintendo on a live-action series for The Legend of Zelda. It should be a kind of softer Game of Thrones, it was said at the time. It wasn’t long before the Nintendo CEO Saturo Iwata denied the rumors that had emerged and announced that they would not be based on real events. The TV series project for Link was never to materialize. Now, however, the stone may start rolling again. After all, the TV landscape has changed dramatically since then. Now is the time for a The Legend of Zelda anime series?

Castlevania’s editor sees potential

The Zelda Dungeon team spoke to David Howe, an editor at Powerhouse Animation behind the latest Netflix Originals animation, Castlevania. He described in the interview that he saw potential for an anime series based on The Legend of Zelda. He is of the opinion that there are already role models for a possible series, after all, there are already some mangas for the game series, of which he owns some editions. The world of the game series is huge, as the extensive The Legend of Zelda – Encyclopedia clearly shows. As Howe described, that would provide a lot of material for an episodic series in which the fabulous world of Link could be processed with all its details. And if the story works in a manga, why not in an anime?

It also seems like the time is right. The incredible success of the anime series Castlevania, Netflix’s own production, shows once again that the format is getting an unbelievable response and that the viewers are enthusiastic. The series is also nearing its end, so Powerhouse Animation might also be ready for a new project. Howe himself said in the interview that he thinks his team would really rush into the opportunity to work on a The Legend of Zelda anime. It is also already known that the other Nintendo icon, Mario, will get its own film, which is planned for 2022. In addition, Nintendo has already announced that they are open to more animations.

Could all of this lead to The Legend of Zelda’s 35th anniversary launching a new anime series for the iconic series? Nothing is official yet, but especially after comments from powerhouse animation editor David Howe, things may have gotten rolling. We’re excited and keep our fingers crossed.
