#Preview, predictions, what to watch for

“Preview, predictions, what to watch for”

An inside look at Sunday’s Jets-Bills Week 14 matchup in Orchard Park.

Marquee matchup

Bills WR Stefon Diggs vs. Jets CB Sauce Gardner

Another week, another top receiver for the Jets’ defense to face. Diggs has scored a touchdown in each of his past three games. He got Gardner on the first play of the game a month ago, beating him on a double-move for a 42-yard gain. But Diggs did not do much damage the rest of the day — five catches for 93 yards.

It won’t just be Gardner on Diggs, of course. The Jets do not usually have their cornerbacks “travel” with receivers. So the Gardner-Diggs matchup will only come when the Bills line up Diggs on Gardner’s side. The rest of the time he likely will face D.J. Reed.

Gardner is the leading candidate for Defensive Rookie of the Year. He has 15 passes defensed, the most in the NFL, and has faced many of the league’s top receivers: Ja’Marr Chase, Tyreek Hill, Justin Jefferson and Diggs, to name a few.

Gardner said this week he believes he deserves Rookie of the Year.

“I don’t really be going too deep into individual accolades that I want, but Defensive Rookie of the Year is one of them, and I feel like I’m the best defensive rookie doing it, for real,” Gardner said. “The guys I’ve had to go against and the stuff I’ve been doing … I feel like I’ve been going against the best that there is.”

Costello’s call

The Jets have not swept the season series with the Bills since 2016. That won’t change Sunday. Josh Allen plays much better in the rematch and beats the Jets with his arm and his legs. Mike White plays decently, but the Bills’ defense gives him just enough problems.

Bills 27, Jets 17

Four downs

Attacking Alen: The Jets held Bills quarterback Josh Allen to what might have been his worst game of the season when the two teams played a month ago. Allen threw two interceptions and did not throw for a touchdown. He did run for two scores, but he had just 205 passing yards. That was in the middle of a three-game slump for Allen, when he threw six interceptions. Since then, he has been intercepted just once in his past three games.

The Jets expect Allen to be eager to get revenge.

“I think when you look at him historically as the year goes on, especially down the stretch, he’s a guy who absolutely wants to put the team on his back,” defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said. “Obviously, there’s going to be an element of payback that all players feel and all coaches feel whenever you lose, and it doesn’t matter how you lose, it’s just you want to get them next time.”

Go, Garrett, go: Wide receiver Garrett Wilson is closing in on the Jets’ receiving yards record by a rookie. Wilson needs 55 yards to pass Keyshawn Johnson, who had 844 yards in 1996. Wilson is sitting at 790 entering this game.

Wilson is coming off his best game of the season at Minnesota, where he caught eight passes for 162 yards. He has had a phenomenal rookie season and is now considered one of the favorites to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. Wilson said he had to overcome some early struggles to find his footing.

“I struggled initially,” he said. “Maybe everyone doesn’t know that. But I knew I was struggling, and I left some plays on the field. For me, it was just staying at it and getting to the point where I know the offense and I can play fast.”

Knight time: Mike White isn’t the only unexpected contributor to the late-season Jets. Undrafted rookie Zonovan “Bam” Knight has emerged as the team’s lead running back in the past two weeks. Knight, who was on the practice squad this season, rushed for 90 yards and had another 28 receiving last week against the Vikings.

“I think he has just brought such a presence and a style that we needed in terms of just putting his foot in the ground and digging out yards,” offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said, “and it usually isn’t even the second guy that brings him down, the whole cavalry usually needs to come.”

Q rating: Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams continues to have a dominant season and is setting himself up for a nice payday this offseason. Among all interior defensive linemen with a minimum of 200 pass rush snaps, Williams ranks first in sack percentage (3.1) and quarterback pressure percentage (13.8). His career-high nine sacks are the most for an interior lineman. Williams has registered a quarterback hit in every game except the first one this season. He will be a key Sunday against Allen and not allowing him to escape the pocket.
