Timmy Trumpet may get his shot.

Buck Showalter has been careful in his usage of Edwin Diaz this season, but with the shutdown closer not having pitched since Friday, he should be ready for action Tuesday night against the Dodgers if the Mets have a late lead. That would mean a live rendition of “Narco” at Citi Field, with Timmy Trumpet — one of the artists behind Diaz’s popular entrance song that has become a spectacle — set to be in attendance.

Diaz pitched on Thursday and Friday against the Rockies, but Showalter held off on using him for a save opportunity on Saturday — which would have been only the second time this season he had pitched on three straight days — instead going to Adam Ottavino to close out a 3-0 win.

“It would have been very easy to use Edwin [Saturday] night,” Showalter said before the Mets were off on Monday. “We live in a result-oriented society: It only is OK if Otto and those guys did the job. So is it the wrong decision if you give up three runs in the ninth inning [Saturday] night? That’s what you gotta ask yourself before you decide to do it or not: are you going to live with the results? That’s hard to do.

“That’s why I asked the question [Saturday]. ‘We have a one-run lead in the ninth inning … 42,000 people there and all of a sudden the gate opens and they’re not playing the trumpets.’

“I want to hear them play,” Showalter added with a grin. “I enjoy that. I think it’s pretty cool.”

Showalter said he made the decision to let Diaz know before Saturday’s game that he would not be pitching that night, “because [otherwise] the temptation is too great.”

Diaz’s 28 saves are two shy of Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase’s major league lead and his 99 strikeouts lead all relievers. But Diaz’s 51 appearances are tied for 45th and 51 ¹/₃ innings are tied for 40th among relievers, with Showalter making sure his closer remains healthy for when it matters most.

Former Yankee Joey Gallo will return to New York on Tuesday with the Dodgers, having received a new lease on his season. After being traded to Los Angeles at the deadline, mercifully ending a brutal Yankees tenure, Gallo entered Monday with a .884 OPS, three home runs, seven walks and 18 strikeouts in 16 games with the Dodgers. With the Mets set to start three right-handers in the series, the left-handed-hitting Gallo figures to be in the Dodgers’ lineup often at Citi Field.

High-A shortstop Shervyen Newton was named the South Atlantic League Player of the Week after batting .391 with three home runs and 10 RBIs for the Brooklyn Cyclones.
