#Times Square wishing wall filled with pleas for end of COVID

The Times Square Wishing Wall is more like the Wailing Wall this year.

Pleas for COVID-19 to end — not to mention 2020 itself — dwarfed the usual longings for money and love written on strips of official Times Square New Year’s Eve confetti at the midtown kiosk.

“Peace for those who lost someone to COVID-19,” read one typical wish on the crowded wall.“No COVID,” read another.

One person’s wish was simple: “To live.” The confetti wishes will flutter down when the city’s famed New Year’s ball drops at midnight to mark the start of 2021. Only this year, for the first time since its inception, the ball will drop in a nearly empty Times Square.

Instead, the annual in-person event — which typically draws more than one million revelers — will be held virtually due to rising COVID-19 infection-rate concerns.

The Times Square Alliance’s Wishing Wall has appeared every December since 2007. About 100,000 submissions were collected at the kiosk, online and on social media last year, according to spokesman TJ Witham.

The group expects wishes written in-person wishes might be lower this year. Only one person came up to the kiosk while The Post checked out the wall.

Jennifer Gomez, 31, of the Bronx, did not say what she was going to write down for her wish but she said her family had had a rough year.

“The virus changed everything and I hope we get rid of it in 2021,” Gomez told The Post. “I just want New York to go back to what it was.”
