The blaze came after demonstrators, who have turned out nightly in the city for weeks, also staged a sit-in at the mayor’s condo building, the Associated Press reported Saturday.
Multiple demonstrators were detained, according to the AP.
Debris was also set aflame outside the Portland Police Association building, police said, claiming that rocks were thrown at officers. A car drove by the protest at one point and someone fired shots in the air, according to a witness.
In the lobby of Mayor Ted Wheeler’s condo building earlier Friday, a dozen demonstrators camped out for three hours, demanding Wheeler’s resignation and that he hear their demands to cut the city’s police budget. The mayor didn’t appear, and it’s unclear if he was home at the time.

Seventy-four people face federal charges stemming from the protests.
