#Pizza Hut’s new ‘Detroit-style’ pizza has some Americans confused

Pizza Hut’s new rectangular, deep-dish pie has catapulted “Detroit-style” pizza into the national spotlight.

The latest iteration of the Italian staple from the Kansas-based chain borrows from a recipe that originated at Buddy’s Rendezvous — now Buddy’s Pizza chain — in Detroit, just after World War II.

The pies are baked in a rectangular or round pan and covered in Wisconsin cheese. Red sauce and toppings are added last.

For many Americans, the Pizza Hut rollout was their first introduction to the Motor City’s twist on the food more commonly associated with New York and Chicago.

“To everyone learning about Detroit-style pizza for the first time, welcome,” Phillip Lewis tweeted.

“Move over New York and Chicago, Detroit Pizza is having its moment in the spotlight,” @AmericanDairyNE tweeted.

The Pizza Hut box comes with a diagram of the pie inside, with an explainer about what exactly Detroit-style pizza is.

New York — while famous for its thin-crust pies cut into wide triangular pieces — is home to several restaurants that serve Detroit-style pizza, including the popular Emmy Squared and Lions & Tigers & Squares in Chelsea.

Those who are fans of the style were happy to see it get the recognition they’ve long believed it deserves.

“Detroit style pizza is 1000% superior to any other iteration and that’s non-negotiable,” Brett Merriman wrote on Twitter.
