#Pinterest lured in Marie Claire’s editor-in-chief as head of content

Pinterest has lured Marie Claire editor-in-chief Aya Kanai to be its new head of content and editorial partnerships, clearing the way for MC executive editor Sally Holmes to move into the top spot.

Holmes has been at Marie Claire since 2018, first as digital director and since January as executive editor working on both the print and digital version.

The appointment was made by Hearst chief content officer, Kate Lewis, acting president of Hearst Magazines Debi Chirichella and Hearst Corp. CEO Steven Swartz.

It’s a sign that even after the sudden exit of former Hearst Magazines president Troy Young, the company looks to its digital side for talent. Holmes arrived at Hearst in 2014 as a senior news editor on Elle.com and started her career at New York magazine’s website before moving to the The Cut vertical in 2012.

Pinterest has been increasing its focus on curated features, including the Today tab and Shopping Spotlights. Kanai has a deep fashion background as the chief fashion director at Hearst magazines since 2016 and managed the fashion styling for HearstMade. She also appeared as a judge on the Project Runway Junior TV series, and was a fashion editor at Teen Vogue from 2004 to 2007.
