Few shows can brag that they were canceled by a network and renewed by the same network for said network’s new streaming service. That sort of triple threat is just bonkers, so it’s fitting that the honor goes to A.P.Bio. Because this one plays by an entirely different set of rules.

Created by SNL vet Mike O’Brien and starring It’s Always Sunny‘s Glenn Howerton (who EPs along with O’Brien and Late Night trio Seth Meyers, Mike Shoemaker and Lorne Michaels), Bio is basically an FX-caliber dark comedy that somehow wound up airing on broadcast for two seasons. Howerton plays disgraced Harvard philosophy genius Jack Griffin, who winds up teaching advanced-placement biology at his old Toledo, Ohio high school following the death of his mom.

Jack’s disdain for almost everything—including his students—and inability to avoid the insidiously optimistic allure of the school’s principal (Patton Oswalt) and his assistant (Paula Pell) won over fans looking for some edge in their comedy during its run on NBC, which opted to pull the plug in May 2019. But two months later, and perhaps inspired by the impressive streaming numbers Bio was bringing in, the network that had expelled it then announced that class would be back in session… on Peacock, their in-the-works streaming service.

Now, over a year later, A.P. Bio is finally back, and we can confirm that the new batch of episodes is wild. There are some surreal situations, more than a few hilariously demented developments, a holiday episode every Dawson’s Creek aficionado deserves and a new student in Jack’s classroom. Here is your exclusive first look.

In addition, Howerton, Oswalt, Pell and O’Brien were joined by Whitlock’s resident Greek Chorus of terrible educators played by Mary Sohn, Jean Villepique and Lyric Lewis during a conversation with yours truly for the 92nd Street Y. The virtual chat tees up the new season, explores the hard-hearted Jack’s slow-burn softening, reveals Oswalt’s love of everything and allows the ensemble to have a blast together. You can catch it all Wednesday, September 2 at 92y.org.

Paula Pell’s Helen Henry Demarcus goes from Principal’s office to Jack’s classroom and manages to wreak more havoc in the first episode back than one human should be able to.

Up until now, Patton Oswalt’s Principal Ralph Durbin has been a song-suffering saint. But holy s*!t, does he lose it after he makes his Toledo TV debut.

Will Jack (Glenn Howerton) ever get his apple into the trash can? More importantly, will he ever find the perfect vintage popcorn maker?

Who’s your (baby) daddy? History teacher Stef (Lyric Lewis) may not want to dig too deep into the archives for that info.

We gotta say, for a health teacher, Michelle (Jean Villepique) has a very unhealthy concept of how to tell the perfect lie.

For an art teacher, you’d think Mary (Mary Sohn) would know how to find her iPhone’s camera app. Then again, this is also a woman we see lick dollar bills in one episode, so she may not be 100% well.
