There’s a new generation of PCIe coming, and it’s a big one! PCI Express 6.0 promises to double the bandwidth for SSDs and GPUs, which could revolutionize computers in the future.

“PCI-SIG is pleased to announce the release of the PCIe 6.0 specification less than three years after the PCIe 5.0 specification,” said Al Yanes, PCI-SIG Chairperson and President in a press release. “PCIe 6.0 technology is the cost-effective and scalable interconnect solution that will continue to impact data-intensive markets like data center, artificial intelligence/machine learning, HPC, automotive, IoT, and military/aerospace, while also protecting industry investments by maintaining backwards compatibility with all previous generations of PCIe technology.”

We should see SSD speeds as fast as 28GBps when this new standard actually becomes available. And while the new standard will offer incredible speeds, it’ll also offer full backward compatibility, meaning that if your motherboard has PCIe 6.0 slots, you can still connect your video cards and SSDs with PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 without issue.

While the PCI Special Interest Group already announced this new standard, PCI Express 5.0 is still just catching on. That means we probably won’t see PCIe 6.0 hardware for another year or more. And even then, it’ll only be some motherboards in servers that take on the new specification, so it could be even longer before you actually have a PCIe 6.0 computer. In fact, it might even take until 2024 or 2025 before we see consumer products with PCIe 6.0.

Even though it might take some time before we see it, the idea of doubling the speed offered by SSDs and GPUs is extremely exciting. After all, who doesn’t want their computer hardware to be faster?
