Paused ‘Citadel’ Spinoffs Will Just Become Part of Amazon Show’s Season 2

Those paused Citadel spinoffs Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana will just “be woven into the upcoming second season of the mothership series Citadel,” Amazon MGM Studios’ head of TV Vernon Sanders said on Wednesday. “While these successful and widely enjoyed international chapters will not continue as individual series, Season 2 of Citadel will be our most exhilarating yet.”

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news that Citadel season two was being pushed and its spinoffs were placed on hold. At the time, THR was told by two sources that Amazon MGM executives were unhappy with what they saw for season two.

Citadel hails from Joe and Anthony Russo’s AGBO. The news of the cancellation of the spinoffs comes on the heels of Jennifer Salke’s departure. Citadel was very much a Salke show. It was Salke who first approached the Russo Bros. with the idea for Citadel as Amazon’s version of James Bond. But now Amazon quite literally has James Bond, and no longer Jen Salke.

Here’s the full Sanders quote:

“Having successfully traversed India and Italy, storylines from both Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana will be woven into the upcoming second season of the mothership series Citadel. While these successful and widely enjoyed international chapters will not continue as individual series, Season 2 of Citadel will be our most exhilarating yet. With high-stakes storytelling, new additions to our amazing cast and bold, cinematic ambition, the new season will deepen the emotional journeys of Nadia, Mason, and Orlick against the relentless force that is Manticore. We’re excited to share what’s next when Citadel Season 2 premieres globally in Q2 of 2026.”

The new logline for Citadel Season 2 reads as follows:

“One month after the events of the first season, we find our Citadel spies underground, as they’re being hunted by Manticore agents around the world. They’re pulled out of hiding to join forces with a new team of unconventional spies when Manticore’s Brazilian billionaire Paulo Braga threatens to unleash a cataclysmic piece of technology, built by Citadel’s own Bernard Orlick, into the world.”

Citadel was intended to be a flagship, global series for Prime Video. It never happened.

Citadel has been a troubled series from the jump — when reshoots, two competing cuts and crew defections on the first season added $75 million to the already $160 million budget. At the time, the show became the second most expensive series ever made, only falling behind fellow Amazon title Rings of Power, the Lord of the Rings TV series. Nonetheless, it was renewed for a second season ahead of the first season’s April 2023 premiere.

More to come…
