Nearly every kid would love to have a dinosaur named after them, and thanks to the efforts of Lida Xing, an associate professor at the China University of Geosciences in Beijing, that dream is now a reality for Nobita Nobi, one of the leading characters of Fujiko F. Fujio's Doraemon manga and anime series.

In a treatise published on Monday, July 05, 2021, the new species of dinosaur was officially named "Eubrontes nobitai". The species was discovered thanks to a set of fossil footprints found in China's Sichuan province in July of 2020. The footprints left by Eubrontes nobitai are about 30 centimers (about 11.8 inches) in length with a stride of about 50 centimeters (about 19.7 inches). Eubrontes nobitai is believed to be a carnivorous dinosaur about 4 meters (about 13 feet) long that lived during the early Cretacious period about 125 million years ago.

In an interview with Kyodo News, Xing noted that he named the dinosaur in tribute to the 1980 Doraemon film, Nobita's Dinosaur, which was popular among children growing up in China during the 1980s. Both Nobita's Dinosaur and the 2020 film Nobita's New Dinosaur feature Nobita Nobi discovering a new dinosaur species and giving them pet-like names.

Associate professor Xing has sent replicas of the Eubrontes nobitai fossil footprints to both Fuji Pro Co. and the Tokyo National Museum, which will display the replica at their Ueno branch beginning on November 30, 2021.
