Manga artist Makoto Akui revealed in a Twitter post that an anime adaptation of her 2017 manga The Blue Orchestra is in the works. More details about the animation studio and production staff will be released at a later date. Akui celebrated the news with a special illustration featuring key characters from the series. 

Akui’s manga series was first serialized in Shogakukan’s Ura Sunday magazine on April 25, 2017. It was also launched in the Manga One app that same year. Nine tankoubon volumes of the comedy-drama romance manga have been published as of April 11, 2022. A 10th volumes will be released on April 19, 2022.

Makoto Akui has previously drawn the manga adaptation of The Anthem of the Heart anime film from 2015 to 2016. Four tankoubon volumes of that manga have been released in total. 

The Blue Orchestra is described as a youth drama where sounds and hearts resound in harmony. The story follows prodigy violinist Hajime Aono. When he was younger, he loved playing the instrument, but has since grown jaded with it, due to unknown personal reasons. Now in his third year of middle school, he has no idea what academic path to follow. Until one day, he meets the free-spirited Ritsuko Akine —  a passionate novice violinist who wants to enroll in a high school with a distinguished orchestra. As he finds himself getting closer with her, he slowly immerses himself in the world of violinists again.
