#Over 500 journalists died from COVID-19 in 2020: report

COVID-19 claimed the lives of over 500 journalists in 2020, according to the Save Journalism Project.

The tragedy hit home for the New York Post when beloved sports photographer Anthony Causi died in April after battling COVID-19, leaving behind a wife and a young son and daughter.

“The news industry suffered not only economic losses, but also the loss of hundreds of reporters’ lives,” said Nick Charles, spokesman for the Save Journalism Project, which released data on the death toll Monday.

“While the past year was quite grim, there are signs of hope for 2021: the vaccine is already in distribution, a new economic relief package has been passed, and the incoming administration has already mentioned wanting to provide more economic help to the media,” Charles added.

He also applauded widespread efforts by the Department of Justice and states’ attorneys general to lob antitrust suits at tech giant Google, which has been accused of hurting the news business by conspiring to dominate the online advertising market.

“Moreover, antitrust enforcement actions have begun to tackle monopolistic powers in the online marketplace, which gives us hope that Big Tech’s dominance will soon be diminished, opening the door for a renewed robust and thriving news industry,” he said.
