#Our opinion on “Lupine III .: The First”

Now “Lupine III .: The First” has finally made it onto the German cinema screens as part of the KAZÉ Anime Nights. But could the film about the sympathetic crook steal the show from all the other films? We wanted to find out and of course we went to the cinema for you! You can read our impressions here.

This is what the film is about:

In Paris, the last and greatest mystery left by the famous archaeologist Bresson is on display: his diary. Allegedly, whoever manages to open the cassette around it and read it, beckons a huge treasure! Of course, it is not surprising that Master Thief Lupine III. there is not far. While he is fighting with Commissioner Zenigata as usual, a young woman seizes the opportunity to steal the diary. Laetitia, who actually wants to become an archaeologist, acts on behalf of her grandfather, who is, however, connected to a dubious Nazi group. Will she team up with Lupine and his friends to decipher the diary and solve the mystery of her own past?

The shuffling Kogoro

Well-known humor in a new guise – this is probably the best way to sum up “Lupine III .: The First”. And to anticipate it: The new look suits the master thief extremely well in my eyes. You hardly notice in the flick that this is his first CG adventure. The character designs were skilfully transferred into the third dimension without losing their original charm.

And the animations are also expressive and turbulent, as the action-packed story demands. The actual idea behind the plot – an ancient and dangerous treasure that the Nazis are after – is certainly not entirely new. Nevertheless, the well-known formula works, especially since it is typically Lupine with a lot of gags. Especially the scenes with a certain historical personality were horrific.

As could hardly be expected otherwise, the German dubbing, directed by Karin Lehmann, was also able to convince me. Although the role of Geralt with David Turba was a bit too young for my taste, he was able to compensate for that with his acting performance. The highlight was of course the regular cast around Peter Flechtner, who once again did an excellent job as a well-rehearsed team.

With “Lupine III .: The First” I was able to see a full-length film about the thief on the big screen for the first time and I am delighted that KAZÉ gave the audience this opportunity. But first of all: You won’t see Lupin’s first adventure here. But his first 3D adventure with a profound story about Lupine and Laetitia’s inheritance.

Compared to Lupine’s popular anime productions, this CGI film is no less fun or wacky than before. The physical comedy of the characters and surroundings from the 2D anime were lovingly detailed and transferred into the 3D look with beautiful tracking shots. That the main character Laetitia looks like a Disney princess isn’t just the only characteristic of a high-quality CG production. A lot of effort has also been put into the action sequences, which are impressive. That’s why I can excuse some generic-looking policemen, because the rest are convincing. The well-known Lupine troop has also been beautifully processed visually. Only for some fans does Jigen look too sexy this time, but that is not an exclusion criterion, but for others maybe even an invitation.

The synchronization fits like a sneaker. In conjunction with the mix, this has made the cinema screening more valuable, for example when Peter Flechtner’s voice reverberates or scares you from the corner. Lina Rabea Mohr as a frightened greenhorn thief was a great choice, but David Turba as the antagonist was a tad too young and too harmless. The lack of characterization of the film character should have been compensated for with a rougher voice. Overall, I am very pleased with the look that was chosen here and I hope for more movies of this kind. And we will continue to get more 2D adventures in the TV segment.

With “Lupine III.” I didn’t have much to do with “Detective Conan” apart from the crossovers. And you don’t really need that for “Lupine III .: The First”. Although the well-known characters are not presented explicitly, you can still see in the course of the film what kind of properties they have. This is exactly how anyone can watch the film without prior knowledge.

I liked the story very much and it offered more content than I thought at the beginning. So the search for a key turned into an ancient, dangerous secret. Although many scenes are not realistic, they are very often enhanced with jokes and humor. The animations differ from the known ones due to the CGI, of course, but they are very well done and do not seem inappropriate. The German dubbing is also very successful. The well-known speakers are almost all there again and have definitely not lost their charm. In combination with the story, the good musical background and the German dubbing, “Lupine III .: The First” is definitely a successful film.
