Hang onto your gears, because a crowdfunding campaign has kicked off for NINJAXIS, a project that seeks to create an original work of 2D animation set in a fantasy world where clockwork-powered technology is the norm. The main staff has been revealed for the project, including:

Amane Shindō as Nejiemon Banemaki, the son of the Banemaki family, a samurai family that co-rules Karakuri City. One day, Nejiemon was granted Karakuri Power, so he fights on behalf of the city as a Karakuri ninja with a secret identity.

And Kaoru Sakura as Clorissa de Windup-Spring, a princess of the Windup-Spring royal family, the other group that governs Karakuri City. Contrary to the wishes of her family, Clorissa isn’t terribly interested in ruling, so she also assumes a secret identity and forms a group of knights that help the Karakuri ninja when they are in trouble.

The story of NINJAXIS is set on the island nation of Nyapones in the 25th year of the Bakeroku Period, after the discovery of the Spiral Spring by Zenmai Hirahaguruma brought an end to the Warring States period and ushered a new era of peace and tranquility. Within this setting, two families that descend from Zenmai – the Banemaki daimyo and the Windup-Spring royal family – rule the prosperous clockwork metropolis of Karakuri City.

The NINJAXIS project intends to highlight the unique charms of traditional 2D-style animation while keeping the use of 3DCG to a minimum. The project currently aims to raise 3 million yen (about $25,575 US) by the end of August via crowdfunding on the Motion Gallery website with the goal of completing a pilot film by October of 2021. The creators hope to ultimately adapt the pilot film into a TV anime production, assuming they can secure investors and funding for a full series.
