Orange County’s Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to make official the tribute to the late Bryant, who was one of nine to perish in a helicopter crash in January. Bryant wore Nos. 8 and 24 during his prolific 20-year NBA career, which is why the date was chosen.
“A treasured member of our Orange County community, Kobe Bryant was the basketball legend that inspired so many young men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up,” Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Michelle Steel said, per CNN.
“I’m proposing August 24 to be dedicated to the memory of Kobe Bryant, and all that he brought to Orange County community, which to (sic) strive to live by his words of encouraging those around us to never give up on their dreams,” she said. “The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do.”
In a separate move, Nike will launch “Mamba Week” beginning on Aug. 23, what would have been Bryant’s 42nd birthday. Throughout the week, the company’s slate of programming and product launches will mark the first release of Bryant’s signature sneakers or jersey since his death.
The Lakers legend was with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven others on the way to a basketball game at Mamba Sports Academy when unsafe flying conditions caused the helicopter to crash.
Bryant was an 18-time All-Star who led the Lakers to five NBA championships. Both of Bryant’s jersey numbers have been retired by the Lakers.
