Despite a slower weekend than last, One Piece Film: Red continues its voyage up the Japanese box office charts. Oricon revealed the updated box office totals for the Toei Animation-produced hit, confirming that indeed the film is the highest-grossing in Japan for the calendar year 2022 (though, not in the box office rankings) surpassing Top Gun Maverick, as well as surpassing Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises on the all-time Japan anime charts.

As of September 4, One Piece Film: Red’s 30th day in theaters, the film has grossed 12.953 billion yen (US$94.04 million) on the back of 9.298 million tickets sold. Luffy’s latest outing is currently the 9th highest-grossing domestic anime film, just behind JUJUTSU KAISEN 0’s 13.75 billion yen take, as well as being behind the film for highest-grossing of 2022, which the Japanese box office industry tracks as December 2021 to November 2022.

On the overall Japanese box office chart, One Piece Film: Red is now at 21st, taking over the slot from 1993’s Jurassic Park and just behind 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody at 13.11 billion yen. Film: Red will enter the top 20 in the next few days and looks like the film may end up just shy of hitting the overall top 10, though time will tell how the voyage will end for Luffy and Uta.

One Piece Film: Red opened in Japanese theaters on August 6. Crunchyroll, who’ll be releasing the film internationally across the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand sometime this fall, describes the seafaring musical adventure as such:

Uta —the most beloved singer in the world. Renowned for concealing her own identity when performing, her voice has come to be described as “otherworldly.” Now, for the first time ever, Uta will reveal herself to the world at a live concert. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans—excited pirates, the Navy watching closely, and the Straw Hats led by Luffy who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance—the voice that the whole world has been waiting for is about to resound. The story begins with the shocking fact that she is Shanks’ daughter.

The One Piece TV anime is also still going strong, with over 1,000 episodes of the series streaming right here on Crunchyroll, with new episodes coming out as they air in Japan.
