#Chris Pratt Addresses Outrage Over Religious Beliefs, Alleged Ties to Anti-LGBTQ Church

“Chris Pratt Addresses Outrage Over Religious Beliefs, Alleged Ties to Anti-LGBTQ Church”

Guardians of the Galaxy actor Chris Pratt addressed the backlash he’s faced on social media for his alleged religious beliefs in a profile for Men’s Health magazine Tuesday. The public outrage, Pratt presumes, stems from his comments during a speech at the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards—the actor, who claims he was instructed to “say something inspiring” while accepting a Generation Award, announced: “God is real. God loves you. God wants the best for you.”

The Jurassic World star was surprised by the subsequent outrage but understands why people might have been put off.

“Maybe it was hubris. For me to stand up on the stage and say things I said, I’m not sure I touched anybody. Religion has been oppressive as f-ck for a long time.”

Pratt continued, expressing his discomfort with being perceived as a public face of religion.

“I didn’t know that I would become the face of religion when I’m really I’m not a religious person. I think there’s a distinction between being religious—adhering to the customs created by man, often appropriating the awe reserved for who I believe is a very real God—and using it to control people, to take money from people, to abuse children, to steal land, to justify hatred. Whatever it is. The evil that’s in the heart of every single man has glommed on to the back of religion and come along for the ride.”

Pratt was Previously Called Out by Elliot Page for Alleged Ties to Anti-LGBTQ Church

The spiraling social media backlash was only worsened by Pratt’s alleged association with Hillsong Church, a Christian church that’s previously come under fire for its anti-LGBTQ policies.

Variety reports that Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page slammed Pratt on social media back in 2019 after Pratt talked about his religion in an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, writing: “If you are a famous actor, and you belong to an organization that hates a certain group of people, don’t be surprised if someone simply wonders why it’s not addressed. Being anti-LGBTQ is wrong, there aren’t two sides. The damage it causes is severe. Full stop.”

Pratt issued a response at the time, which read: “It has recently been suggested that I belong to a church which ‘hates a certain group of people’ and is ‘infamously anti-LGBTQ.’ Nothing could be further from the truth. I am a man who believes that everyone is entitled to love who they want free from the judgment of their fellow man.”

While Pratt refrained from naming names in his initial statement, he left no uncertainty in his Men’s Health profile. “I never went to Hillsong. I’ve never actually been to Hillsong. I don’t know anyone from that church.”

When asked why it took so long for him to publicly renounce Hillsong, the actor replied “I’m gonna, like, throw a church under the bus? If it’s like the Westboro Baptist Church, that’s different.”

Although some of his comments may seem “too little too late” for some, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn is quick to jump to Pratt’s defense. “It absolutely infuriates me. Chris is unspeakably kind to people; he goes out of the way to help kids. He’s an especially loving father. And there’s a lot of stuff that people have literally just made up about him—about his politics, about who he is, about what he believes of other people, you know?”

Pratt’s latest project, Prime Video thriller The Terminal List, premieres July 1.
