#NYPD Commissioner Shea shows bulletproof vest that saved cop’s life

It was nothing short of a Christmas miracle.

The police officer who was shot in the back while responding to a domestic dispute in Brooklyn Thursday night was saved by his bulletproof vest.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea held up the vest in front of the media at Kings County Hospital to show exactly where the 27-year-old cop from the 77th Precinct was struck.

“Our officer is struck once in the back where it penetrates the vest . . . and does not penetrate the skin,” Shea explained. “He is in a little pain, but he is in extremely good spirits and we anticipate that he will be going home shortly.”

The officer arrived at a home in Crown Heights on a call of a dispute when the suspect, identified as 20-year-old William Moss by sources, shot him before fleeing the scene, police said.

Cops chased the perp for several blocks and fired at least seven shots before taking him into custody, according to police.

Police have not announced charges.

“As the clock turns on Christmas I think we’ll call this a Christmas miracle,” Shea added.

Last December, the NYPD rolled out a new bulletproof vest program in which 550 detectives from across the city received slimmer, easier to wear vests.

The program was created in response to the death of Det. Brian Simonsen, who wasn’t wearing a vest at the time he was killed by friendly fire in Queens last February.
