NYPD bike cops break out ‘turtle uniforms’ amid George Floyd protests

NYPD cops deployed to protests are suiting up in motocross gear they’re calling “turtle uniforms” to protect against objects hurled at them as riots grip the city, a police source said Thursday.

The elite crowd control bike cops began wearing the so-called Yaffa uniforms — which look plucked from the movie “Tron” with a hard plastic shell and cushioning along the spine and elbows — Monday after officers were injured during protests, the source said.

Designed based on BMX bike gear and hockey equipment, the Fox Racing brand jacket shields cops from objects hurled at speeds up to 40 mph along with falls and other injuries.

“It was created so you don’t break anything if you fall, or if you get with a projectile to absorb the blow,” the police source said.

Cops have nicknamed the gear “Turtle Uniforms” due to a tortoise-like protective plastic shell that runs along the back side of the jacket.

The unorthodox uniform has already caused some confusion  — on the first night of protests, patrol cops thought the crowd control officers were protestors and stopped them.

The NYPD owns roughly 100 of the $160 suits along with helmets featuring jaw-protection devices. Officers were trained on how to use the uniform by Seattle cops, who face more riots, sources said.
