#NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio rejoices over Andrew Cuomo’s demise on Twitter

If you can make it there?

Mayor Bill de Blasio appeared to rejoice at the demise of his longtime political nemesis with a tweet that celebrated the “Greatest city in the world.” The message was sent just moments after former Gov. Andrew Cuomo formally ended his political career.

Cuomo submitted his resignation on Monday night. His tenure officially ended at midnight. The moment marked the political collapse of the most powerful man in the state.

But the mayor seemed a bit festive.

“Greatest city in the world,” de Blasio tweeted at 12:01 a.m., along with a photo of Lower Manhattan’s skyline set behind the Brooklyn Bridge.

The social media post also came as Gov. Kathy Hochul took control as New York’s first female governor.

Twitter users were quick to call out the timing of the tweet and give suggestions for its motive.

“Shading Cuomo right there,” wrote one commenter. “Amazing timing,” another person wrote.

De Blasio and Cuomo have notoriously butted heads, trading barbs in public at a high frequency.

About 12 hours earlier, Cuomo, in his pre-taped farewell speech, took a parting shot at de Blasio near the end of the remarks.

“[Democratic nominee] Eric Adams will be the next mayor of New York City,” Cuomo said.

“I think he’ll bring a new philosophy and competence to the position which can give New York City residents hope for the future.”
